World Cup 2010

Okay, so this is the first time I have really tried to watch the World Cup. I'm not in love with the event. Let me put it this way, I'm not exactly upset that I'll need to wait 4 more years before another one comes along. I know there are a lot of soccer snobs out there who will call me small-minded (like that guy Ignacio at work), but I can't help it, soccer is kind of annoying. I played soccer for four years too when I was a kid, but that was fun, watching soccer is, for me, only mildly entertaining. Why? Here are a few reasons:

1) I don't like that they can end in ties. I know that now that they are entering into the round of 16, they'll do penalty shots to determine the results of games, but I just find it annoying to watch a game for 90+ minutes and it end 0-0.

2) What the heck is stoppage time? OK, here's what I got. There are 90 minutes of play and the clock doesn't stop for anything (except half-time). Now, when someone gets hurt, the clock still runs but the ref. calculates the time it takes to attend to the player and then puts it at the end. Sounds OK, except that no one knows how much stoppage time there, they just mysteriously come up with a number. And, here's a bright idea, just stop the clock! If football, basketball, hockey and a slew of other sports can figure it out, so can FIFA. The funny thing is, us Americans are supposed to be the little ADD kids of the world and here we properly manage the time of our sports because we care more about fairness than keeping up the pace of play.

3) Unexplained fouls. Why didn't the third US goal against Slovenia count? Oh that's right, nobody knows. I know there are blown calls in every sport but managers are allowed to argue, reviews happen, and oh yeah, the officials have to actually explain what they're doing.

Finally, I know that this doesn't occur at ever World Cup, but I hate the vuvuzela horn. Most annoying thing in the world.
